The Voice That Built an Empire

Bing Crosby sold over a billion records, his films redefined what a movie musical could be, and he quietly built a business empire behind his easygoing charm. He wasn’t flashy. He wasn’t scandalous. But he was one of the most influential entertainers of the 20th century. He was the first multimedia star, one of the most popular musical artists of the 20th century, a leader in record sales, network radio ratings as well as motion picture grosses from 1926 to 1977.

In 1948 he was voted by the American public as the „most admired man alive“ – before any sports icon or the Pope. He was also called the „person who has done the most for the morale of overseas entertainment“ during WWII – ahead of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, General Dwight Eisenhower, and Bob Hope. It is estimated that he filled half of the total hours of recorded music that was aired on US radio weekly. And there is actually even more to this man that we will cover in this episode. This is the story of a true cultural icon!
