More InformationVictor Mature. The name alone sounds like a creation of the studio era — masculine, mythic, and just a little bit exaggerated. He had the looks of a demigod, the build of a gladiator, and the voice of a man who’d been around the block and didn’t take any of it too seriously.
To millions of fans, he was the brooding heartthrob of Samson and Delilah, the soulful soldier in My Darling Clementine, the haunted gladiator of The Robe. To his co-stars and colleagues? He was a cut-up, a golf fanatic, and a man more self-aware than Hollywood gave him credit for.
Victor Mature was a movie star who never quite bought his own hype — and was all the more interesting for it.
